Pharmacological action

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA, gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a biogenic amine that restores the processes of metabolism in the brain, promotes the utilization of glucose by the brain and the removal of toxic metabolic products from it, and normalizes the dynamics of nervous processes in the brain. Increases the productivity of thinking, improves memory, has a mild psychostimulating effect, favorably affects the restoration of movement and speech after a violation of cerebral circulation. Helps to reduce and stabilize high blood pressure and reduce subjective symptoms of arterial hypertension (dizziness, sleep disorders). It has moderate antihypoxic and anticonvulsant effects. In patients with diabetes mellitus, it reduces the glucose content; with normal blood glucose content, it has the opposite effect (due to glycogenolysis). Pharmacokineticabsorption is fast and fairly complete. Cmax in blood plasma is reached after 60 minutes, then the concentration decreases rapidly. After 24 hours, GABA is not detected in the blood plasma.

Indications

Conditions after suffering disorders of cerebral circulation; after traumatic brain injuries. Atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels with signs of softening of the brain. Alcoholic encephalopathy and polyneuritis. Headache, dizziness, sleep disorders in hypertension. Infantile cerebral palsy; consequences of craniocerebral and birth trauma in children; mental retardation in children; kinetoses.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to GABA.

Side effects

Possible: nausea, vomiting, lability of blood pressure, dyspepsia, fever, sleep disorders.

Interaction

With simultaneous use, it is possible to increase the effect of benzodiazepine derivatives, many sleeping pills and antiepileptic drugs.

How to take, course of use and dosage

The daily dose for adults is 3-3.75 g. Children aged 1 to 3 years – 1-2 g / day; from 4 to 6 years-2-3 g/day; older than 7 years-3 g/day. The daily dose for children and adults is divided into 3 doses and taken before meals. The course of treatment lasts from 2-3 weeks to 2-4 months. For the prevention and treatment of kinetosis, adults – 500 mg 3 times/day for 3-4 days, children-250 mg 3 times/day for 3-4 days.

Special instructions

In the first days of treatment, blood pressure may fluctuate.
