Pharmacological action
Boric acid is an antiseptic and also has an insecticidal (including anti-pediculous) effect. Coagulates microbial cell proteins (including enzymatic ones), disrupts the permeability of the cell wall. 5% aqueous solution suppresses phagocytosis processes,2 4% solution delays the growth and development of bacteria.
It has an irritating effect on mucous membranes, granulation tissues. Absorbed, it has systemic toxic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
It penetrates well through the skin and mucous membranes; it is slowly excreted and can accumulate in organs and tissues. It is excreted by the kidneys in 50% (within 12 hours), the remainder within 5-7 days.
