Pentasa is an anti-inflammatory.
Pentasa reduces the formation of leukotrienes and cytokinins, neutralizes free radicals, and inhibits leukocyte chemotaxis.
Non-specific ulcerative colitis; Crohn’s disease.
During pregnancy and lactation, it is prescribed only in cases where the positive effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects.
Hypersensitivity (including to salicylates, etc. components of the drug); severe violations of liver and kidney function.
Abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, skin rash in the form of urticaria or eczema;
very rarely-muscle and joint pain, temporary hair loss, liver and kidney function disorders, pericarditis, myocarditis, pancreatitis, changes in blood formula (leukopenia, granulocytopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia).
When used concomitantly, Pentas enhances the hypoglycemic effect of sulfonylurea derivatives, the ulcerogenicity of corticosteroids, the toxicity of methotrexate and the effect of anticoagulants.
When used simultaneously, Pentas weakens the activity of furosemide, spironolactone, sulfonamides, rifampicin.
Simultaneous use of Pentas increases the effectiveness of uricosuric drugs.
When used concomitantly, Pentasa slows down the absorption of cyancobalamin.
Inside, without chewing, if possible swallowing whole (to facilitate swallowing, divide into several parts or dissolve in water or juice immediately before ingestion), the dose is selected individually.
Adults with exacerbation of ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease-usually up to 4 g / day in several doses; maintenance dose-2 g/day in several doses for ulcerative colitis and 4 g/day in several doses for Crohn’s disease; children over 2 years — usually 20-30 mg/kg / day in several doses.
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, gastralgia, weakness, drowsiness.
Treatment: gastric lavage, use of laxatives, symptomatic therapy.
Treatment of patients with impaired liver or kidney function is possible only after assessing the degree of their severity.
Renal function ( blood creatinine) should be monitored regularly throughout the course of treatment and especially at the beginning of treatment.
If you suspect the development of pericarditis, myocarditis and changes in the blood formula, you should stop treatment. Manifestations of the above-mentioned adverse reactions may include severe pathological changes in blood composition – increased bleeding, subcutaneous hemorrhage, sore throat and fever; with pericarditis and / or myocarditis – fever and pain behind the sternum in combination with shortness of breath.
In some cases of an allergic reaction to sulfasalazine, intolerance to Pentasa may also develop (risk of allergy to salicylates).
Patients who are “slow acetylators” have an increased risk of developing side effects.
Possible staining of urine and tear fluid in yellow-orange color, staining of soft contact lenses.
Use in patients with impaired liver function: The drug is contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency.
Use in patients with impaired renal function: The drug is contraindicated in patients with severe renal insufficiency.
Effect on the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms: The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms.
