Composition
Active ingredient
Castor oil
(castor oil) – 30 g,50 g or 100 g
Pharmacological action
A laxative. When taken orally, it is broken down by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which causes irritation of intestinal receptors throughout its entire length and reflex increased peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs in 5-6 hours. When taking castor oil, there is also a reflex contraction of the uterine muscles.
Indications
Constipation, bowel preparation before diagnostic procedures.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the drug, “acute” stomach, pregnancy, children under 12 years of age, poisoning with fat-soluble substances (phosphorus, benzene, etc. ), treatment of helminth infestation with male fern extract. Use during pregnancy and lactation. The use of the drug during pregnancy is contraindicated. If it is necessary to use the drug during lactation, stop breastfeeding for the entire period of treatment.
Side effects
Possible allergic reactions. With prolonged use – intestinal atony, hypovitaminosis A and D. If you experience any of the side effects listed in the instructions or if they get worse, or if you experience any other side effects not listed in the instructions, you should immediately inform your doctor.
Interaction
When used concomitantly, it reduces the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K. In doses up to 4 g/day, it increases the absorption of fat-soluble preparations – male fern extract, mebendazole, griseofulvin, probucol. When used simultaneously with saline laxatives, a sharp increase in the laxative effect is possible. M-anticholinergic agents (atropine sulfate, platyphylline, pirenzepine), antispasmodics (papaverine, drotaverine), antihistamines weaken the effect of castor oil. Enhances the effect of agents that stimulate the contractile activity of the myometrium (methylergometrine, ergometrine, oxytocin, prostaglandins), up to the threat of uterine rupture during childbirth. Prolonged use of castor oil can lead to the development of hypokalemia, which may increase the effect of cardiac glycosides and reduce the effectiveness of antiarrhythmic drugs. Concomitant use of castor oil with diuretics, corticosteroids, and licorice root preparations may increase potassium loss. If you use the above and other medications (including over-the-counter medications), please consult your doctor before using castor oil.
How to take, course of use and dosage
Inside. Adults take 15-30 g (1-2 tablespoons) once a day.
For children from 12 to 18 years of age, the drug is prescribed by a doctor-10-15 g (1 dessert spoon -1 tablespoon) once a day. Duration of application-no more than three days.
If there is no improvement after 3 days, or if the symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear, you should consult your doctor. Use the drug only according to the indications, the method of use and in the doses indicated in the instructions for use.
Overdose
It develops when taking castor oil in a dose of more than 7 g/kg of body weight. Typical symptoms: diarrhea, severe abdominal pain of a spastic nature, impaired kidney function, dizziness, hallucinations, loss of consciousness. Specific antidotes are atropine sulfate and loperamide. Relief measures include drug withdrawal, replacement of fluid and electrolyte losses (preferably combined oral and intravenous use), and symptomatic therapy aimed at eliminating the resulting disorders. With the development of neurotoxic effects, diazepam 5-10 mg is administered intravenously.
Special instructions
The drug should not be used for more than 3 days; if there is no effect, it is recommended to consult a doctor. Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms. The use of the drug does not affect the ability to perform potentially dangerous activities that require increased concentration of attention and speed of psychomotor reactions (driving vehicles, working with moving mechanisms, working as a dispatcher, operator).
