Pharmacological action
Pharmacology:
Corvalol is a combined drug, the action of which is due to the properties of its constituent substances. It has a sedative and antispasmodic effect. Facilitates the onset of natural sleep.
Alpha-bromisovaleric acid ethyl ether has a sedative (similar to the valerian effect) and antispasmodic effect, which is mainly due to irritation of the oral and nasopharyngeal receptors, a decrease in reflex excitability in the central nervous system and increased inhibition in the neurons of the cortex and subcortical structures of the brain, as well as a decrease in the activity of the central vasomotor centers and a direct local antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles.
Phenobarbital enhances the sedative effect of other components, helps reduce the excitement of the central nervous system and facilitates the onset of sleep. Peppermint oil has a reflex vasodilating, antispasmodic, mild choleretic, antiseptic effect.
The mechanism of action is associated with the ability to irritate the “cold” receptors of the oral mucosa and reflexively expand mainly the vessels of the heart and brain. Eliminates the phenomenon of flatulence by irritating the receptors of the gastrointestinal mucosa, increasing intestinal motility.
Indications
Corvalol is prescribed as a symptomatic (soothing and vasodilating) agent for functional disorders of the cardiovascular system, neurosis-like conditions accompanied by increased irritability, when falling asleep is disturbed, tachycardia, a state of agitation with pronounced vegetative manifestations;Â as an antispasmodic agent – for intestinal spasms.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug Corvalol;Â severe renal and / or hepatic dysfunction, lactation (if necessary, use during lactation should decide whether to stop breastfeeding), pregnancy, age up to 18 years (efficacy and safety have not been established), lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption (the drug contains lactose).
Side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, slowing of the heart rate, decreased ability to concentrate, allergic reactions. Gastrointestinal disorders may occur. These symptoms disappear with a decrease in the dose of Corvalol or discontinuation of the drug.
With prolonged use of the drug, drug dependence, addiction, withdrawal syndrome, as well as the accumulation of bromine in the body and the development of bromism phenomena may occur.
Interaction
Drugs that depress the central nervous system, enhance the effect of the drug Corvalol.
Phenobarbital (an inducer of microsomal oxidation) can reduce the effectiveness of drugs metabolized in the liver (including coumarin derivatives, griseofulvin, glucocorticosteroids, oral contraceptives); increases the effect of local anesthetics, analgesics and hypnotics. The drug increases the toxicity of methotrexate.
The effect of the drug is enhanced against the background of the use of valproic acid preparations.
How to take, course of use and dosage
The dose is set individually.
Take orally, before meals, with water. Adults are usually prescribed 1-2 Corvalol tablets 2 times a day. With tachycardia, a single dose can be increased to 3 tablets. The maximum daily dose is 6 tablets of Corvalol.
The duration of use of the drug is determined by the doctor individually.
Overdose
Symptoms: central nervous system depression, nystagmus, ataxia, decreased blood pressure, agitation, dizziness, weakness, chronic bromine intoxication (depression, apathy, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, hemorrhagic diathesis, impaired coordination of movements).
Treatment: discontinuation of the drug, gastric lavage and symptomatic therapy, with CNS depression – caffeine, niketamide.
Special instructions
There is no experience of using the drug in children under 18 years of age.
Do not drink alcohol while using Corvalol.
It is recommended to refrain from engaging in potentially dangerous activities that require increased concentration of attention and speed of psychomotor reactions (including driving vehicles and working with complex mechanisms).
