The beneficial properties of garlic in relation to the work of the cardiovascular system have been well known for many years. Specifically, garlic extract is recommended by the American Society of Cardiology and the American Heart Society for the elimination of risk factors for cardiovascular disease 1.

Garlic extract containing allicin has a weakening activity against the angiotesin-converting enzyme and acts as a calcium channel blocker, which reduces the sensitivity of blood vessels to vasoconstrictor signals and, consequently, improves the condition of the arteries.

Numerous clinical studies have shown that garlic preparations reduce mean 2 and systolic blood pressure 3, reduce the level of total cholesterol 4, low-density lipoproteins 5 (LDL, “bad cholesterol”).

The effectiveness of the active ingredient of garlic extract S-allylcysteine in erectile dysfunction has been proven in experimental studies. It increases the production of nitric oxide (NO), which leads to dilation of the arteries that provide an erection. 6

Red-root Sage Extract (Salvia miltiorrhiza)

Salvia miltiorrhiza is a source of unique biologically active substances: Tanginone IIA, cryptotnasinone and Salvianic acid.

According to the results of studies, it was shown that red-root sage extract increases the number of erectile episodes, improves the cellular structure of the cavernous bodies by reducing the programmed death (apoptosis) of endothelial cells caused by hyperglycemia, and also increases the density of blood vessels in the cavernous bodies. 7

Tanshinone IIA, which is part of S. miltiorrhiza extract, increases the activity of endothelial NO-synthase (eNOS)8, and also protects endothelial cells from damage, preventing the development of endothelial dysfunction – the first manifestation of the atherosclerotic process 9.

Chromium picolinate

Chromium is an essential trace element that is vital for glucose metabolism in the body. Chromium plays an important role in glucose transporters; chromium preparations stimulate insulin receptors and enhance insulin signal10.

In addition, chromium enhances the formation of insulin receptors and enhances the synthesis of insulin-like growth factor receptors, which are able to functionally replace faulty insulin receptors 11. Due to its structure, chromium picolinate, in comparison with other sources of chromium (chloride and nicotinate), is absorbed most fully and has the most pronounced therapeutic effect 12.

A meta-analysis of multiple clinical studies has shown that chromium picolinate use for at least 5 weeks reduces fasting glucose by 1.6 mmol / l and lowers total cholesterol 13. Chromium also significantly reduces the level of glycated hemoglobin by 0.55 pp, as well as reduces the level of triglycerides and increases the level of HDL-14.

Psyllium

Psyllium is the husk of psyllium seeds. Psyllium is more than 80% water-soluble, indigestible fiber (dietary fiber). Psilluim binds bile acids in the intestinal lumen, preventing the absorption of fats. Psyllium also increases the viscosity of intestinal contents, which slows down the absorption of simple carbohydrates.

Comparative studies have shown that the use of psyllium helps to reduce the level of glycated hemoglobin (by 0.7 pp), glucose (by 1.4 mmol/l) and insulin (by 20%) on an empty stomach in patients with metabolic syndrome 15. Moreover, the use of Psyllium, even without changing the diet pattern for 6 months, can reduce body weight by 3.3 kg compared to placebo 16.1
