Composition

Pharmacological action

Ersefuril is an intestinal antiseptic, an antidiarrheal drug.

Like other nitrofurans, it blocks some redox enzyme reactions in microbial cells.

When used in therapeutic doses, it has a bacteriostatic effect, in high doses – bactericidal. It is active against gram-positive (Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Clostridium) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiela, Enterobacter, Vibrio cholerae, etc. ) microorganisms. It does not affect saprophytic flora (it does not cause dysbiosis). Bacterial strains do not develop resistance to the drug.

Pharmacokinetics

Nifuroxazide is practically not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract,99% of the dose taken remains in the intestine and exerts its antimicrobial effect there. Nifuroxazide is excreted by the intestines: 20% — unchanged, and the remaining amount of nifuroxazide — chemically modified.

Indications

Acute bacterial diarrhea that occurs without deterioration of the general condition, fever, intoxication (in addition to adequate severity of diarrhea, rehydration by ingestion of fluids and electrolytes or, if necessary, their intravenous use).

Use during pregnancy and lactation

In animal studies, nifuroxazide did not have a teratogenic effect.

However, as a precautionary measure, it is not recommended to take nifuroxazide during pregnancy (insufficient clinical experience of use during pregnancy).

Lactation period. During the lactation period, it is possible to continue breastfeeding in the case of a short course of treatment with the drug.

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to nitrofuran derivatives or any excipients of the drug;
• pregnancy;
• fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrose and isomaltase insufficiency (due to the presence of sucrose in the drug);
• children under 6 years of age.

Side effects

Allergic reactions such as skin rashes, urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylactic shock are extremely rare.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Ersefuril is taken orally. For adults or children over 6 years of age.

Adults — 4 capsules/day (800 mg), divided into 2-4 doses.

Children older than 6 years — 3-4 capsules/day (600-800 mg), divided into 2-4 doses.

The duration of the course of treatment is no more than 7 days.

Special instructions

In the case of bacterial diarrhea with signs of systemic damage (deterioration of the general condition, increased body temperature, symptoms of intoxication or infection), antibacterial drugs with good systemic diffusion should be used.

In case of severe, prolonged diarrhea, severe vomiting, or refusal to eat, intravenous fluids and electrolytes for rehydration should be considered.

If diarrhea persists for more than 2 days during treatment, treatment should be reviewed and the need for oral or intravenous fluids and electrolytes should be considered. The volume of fluid administered and the method of its use (inside, in/in) should correspond to the severity of diarrhea, age and clinical condition of the patient.

Influence on the ability to drive a car or perform work that requires an increased rate of physical and mental reactions. The drug does not affect the ability to drive vehicles or engage in other potentially dangerous activities.
