Pharmacological action
Ofloxacin is an antimicrobial drug from the group of broad-spectrum fluoroquinolones.
The bactericidal effect of ofloxacin is associated with the blockade of the DNA gyrase enzyme in bacterial cells.
Highly active against most gram-negative microorganisms: Esherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Proteus spp, Morganella morganii, Shigella spp., Klebsiella spp. Enterobacter spp, Serratia spp, Citrobacter spp, Yersinia spp, Providencia spp, Haemopilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria menigitidis, Mycoplasma spp., Legionella pneumophila, Acinetobacter spp, Chlamydia spp.
It is active against some strains of Gram-positive microorganisms, in particular Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.
Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas spp. are moderately sensitive to ofloxacin.
Ofloxacin acts on microorganisms that produce beta-lactamase.
Anaerobic bacteria (except B. Urealiticus) are not sensitive to the drug.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the therapeutic concentration of the drug in the eye tissues is achieved.
Indications
Infectious and inflammatory diseases of the anterior eye caused by microorganisms sensitive to ofloxacin:
- blepharitis, barley, conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, keratitis, corneal ulcer,
- chlamydia infection of the eye,
- prevention and treatment of bacterial infection after eye injuries and surgical interventions.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
There are no data on the negative effect of ofloxacin on the fetus, but the drug is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).

Side effects
Possible: allergic reactions, transient conjunctival hyperemia, burning sensation, eye discomfort, itchy and dry conjunctiva, photophobia, lacrimation.
Rare: dizziness.
Interaction
Drug interaction of the drug Floxal is not described.
How to take, course of use and dosage
1.5 cm strips of ointment are placed behind the lower eyelid of the affected eye 2-3 times/day;
in the case of chlamydia infection – 5 times/day. It is not recommended to use the drug for more than 2 weeks.
If more than one preparation is used simultaneously, the ointment should be used last.
Overdose
There are no data on overdose with Floxal.
Special instructions
It is not recommended to wear contact lenses while using the drug
Avoid prolonged exposure to bright light and wear sunglasses (due to possible photophobia).
Influence on the ability to drive motor vehicles and manage mechanisms
In case of visual disturbances associated with instillation of eye drops or application of ointment, patients should refrain from potentially dangerous activities until the undesirable phenomena disappear.
Form of production
Eye ointment is uniform, light yellow in color.
Storage conditions
The drug should be stored in a place protected from light at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
Shelf
life is 3 years. After opening the tube – 6 weeks.
