Gaviscon is an antacid.
Pharmacodynamics
When taken orally, Gaviscon reacts quickly with acidic stomach contents. In this case, an alginate gel is formed, which prevents the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux. During regurgitation, the gel is more likely than the contents of the stomach to enter the esophagus, where it reduces irritation of the mucous membrane.
Pharmacokinetics
The mechanism of action of the drug Gaviscon does not depend on absorption into the systemic circulation.
