Composition
Distilled glycerin-1000 g; auxiliary substance-purified water to obtain glycerol with a density of 1,223-1,233.
Pharmacological action
Being an osmotically active compound, it increases osmotic pressure. After oral use, due to the dehydrating effect, it lowers intracranial pressure and intraocular pressure. When used rectally, it has a mild irritating effect on the rectal mucosa and reflexively stimulates the contractility of the intestine, exerting a laxative effect, helps soften the fecal masses and pass them through the large intestine. It has a softening and dermatoprotective effect, has high hygroscopic and lubricating properties. When applied to the skin, it activates metabolic processes in it.
Indications
Inside – for dehydration therapy for brain edema caused by various causes, before or after operations in ophthalmology (to reduce intraocular pressure), to stop an acute attack of glaucoma; rectally – for constipation of various origins (functional, psychogenic, age – related), limited mobility, pregnancy and lactation, for the prevention of constipation in patients who cannot strain during defecation (with painful, thrombosed hemorrhoids, perianal abscess, anorectal stenosis, after myocardial infarction); topically-to soften the skin and treat the mucous membranes. In pharmaceutical practice, it is used as a basis for the preparation of ointments and other dosage forms.
Recommendations for use
As a laxative, apply 1-2 tablespoons a day inside, rectally-in enemas of 2-5 ml 1 time a day 15-20 minutes after breakfast. Treatment is stopped after normal intestinal motility is restored. Externally-treat the skin and mucous membranes with a solution for external use.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, renal failure, appendicitis, bleeding, diarrhea, acute hemorrhoids, anal fissures, inflammatory diseases and rectal tumors.
Side effects
Allergic reactions. With prolonged topical application-irritation and discomfort in the rectum, rarely-catarrhal proctitis.
Special instructions
Regular use as a laxative is not recommended. Systemic use in dehydrated patients, as well as in the presence of diabetes mellitus, increases the risk of developing symptoms of severe dehydration, leading to vascular overload and, accordingly, hyperglycemia. Non-ketone hyperglycemic coma occurs quite rarely.
Form of production
