Composition
Active ingredient:
sodium picosulfate 7.5 mg;
Auxiliary substances: Â
sodium methylparaoxybenzoate;
sorbitol 70%;
hydrochloric acid;
purified water.
Pharmacological action
Guttalax is a laxative. The active ingredient-sodium picosulfate-is a laxative of the triarylmethane group.
As a local laxative, sodium picosulfate after bacterial breakdown in the large intestine has a stimulating effect on the mucous membrane of the large intestine, increasing peristalsis, promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the large intestine. This leads to stimulation of the act of defecation, reduction of evacuation time and softening of the stool.
Pharmacokinetics
After ingestion, sodium picosulfate enters the colon. Absorption of the drug is insignificant, which excludes its enterohepatic circulation.
In the colon, sodium picosulfate is broken down to form the active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)- pyridyl-2-methane. The time of development of the laxative effect of the drug is determined by the rate of release of the active metabolite and is 6-12 hours.
A small part of the drug enters the systemic circulation.
There is no correlation between the laxative effect of the active metabolite and its concentration in the blood serum.
Indications
Chronic constipation
Contraindications
- hypersensitivity
- intestinal obstruction
- acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs abdominal
- pain of unclear origin
- bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract.
Side effects
Diarrhea, abdominal pain, dehydration, impaired water and electrolyte balance, weakness, convulsions, decreased blood pressure.
Interaction
With the simultaneous use of Guttalax and diuretics or corticosteroids, the risk of developing electrolyte disorders increases.
Concomitant use of broad-spectrum antibiotics may reduce the laxative effect of Guttalax.
How to take, course of use and dosage
Guttalax is taken orally, before going to bed.
For adults, the initial dose is 10 drops, for severe and persistent constipation-up to 30 drops.
For children over 4 years of age, the initial dose is 5-10 drops.
Depending on the effect obtained, the dose is increased or decreased at subsequent doses.
Overdose
Symptoms: Â Diarrhea, abdominal pain, dehydration, impaired water and electrolyte balance, weakness, convulsions, low blood pressure. In addition, with a chronic overdose, ischemia of the colon mucosa, secondary hyperaldosteronism, urolithiasis, and renal tubule damage may develop.
Treatment: Â Gastric lavage, correction of water-electrolyte balance disorders, antispasmodics. Glucocorticosteroids and diuretics increase the risk of developing electrolyte disorders.
Broad-spectrum antibiotics reduce the laxative effect.
