Guttasil oral drops 7.5mg/ml vial, 15ml

Description

Composition 1 ml of Guttasil drops:

• 7.5 mg of sodium picosulfate in the form of monohydrate (Active ingredient);
• 460 mg of sorbitol;
• 2 mg of sodium methylparahydroxybenzoate;
• a small amount of hydrochloric acid solution – as much as is necessary to achieve the desired acidity values (pH=6-7);
• up to 1 ml of water for injection.

Pharmacological action

It has a laxative effect, increases intestinal motility.

Indications

Guttasil is prescribed in such cases:

• disorders of the stool in the form of constipation;
• diseases of the colon and anus, in which it is necessary to facilitate the process of defecation (hemorrhoids, cracks, proctitis);
• preparatory stage before invasive medical measures (surgery, instrumental or X-ray examination).

Contraindications

It is forbidden to prescribe Guttasil for:

• hypersensitivity to the Active ingredient, its metabolites, additional ingredients included in the composition of medicines;
• intestinal obstruction;
• acute inflammation in the intestine or other organs located in the abdominal cavity, for example, in acute appendicitis, ulcerative colitis, peritonitis);
• acute abdominal pain, especially if it is accompanied by nausea and vomiting;
• severe dehydration;
• lactation;
• pregnancy (first trimester).

Very carefully, the drug should be used in such categories of patients:

• elderly people;
• patients with hypokalemia or high magnesium content in the blood;
• asthenics;
• pregnant women in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

Side effects

With short-term treatment, almost no one experienced any side effects. But with an increase in the duration of taking the drug, the risk of undesirable consequences increases.

Consequences of the side effect of Guttasil on the organs and systems of the human body:

• Skin disorders: rash, pruritus, urticaria.
• Electrolyte and water balance disorders: dehydration, excessive excretion of sodium and potassium.
• From the gastrointestinal tract: digestive disorders, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramps, increased gas formation in the intestines, increased intestinal tone, pain in the anus. All this usually passes with a decrease in the dose.
• From the immune system: allergy symptoms, development of angioedema.
• Disorders of the central nervous system:  headaches, high fatigue, convulsive readiness, convulsions, drowsiness.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Instructions for use of Guttasil advises taking the entire dose at one time, in the evening before going to bed. In this case, there is a high probability that constipation will pass in the morning and stool will appear.

Dosage:

• patients older than 10 years – 5-10 mg or 13-27 drops, measured by the dispenser on the bottle;
• children 4-10 years-2.5-5 mg or 7-13 drops;
• children under 4 years of age, the dose is calculated according to weight – for 1 kg of body weight,2 drops or 250 mg of medication should be given.

In most cases, children are prescribed only a single dose of medication. It is undesirable to prescribe Guttasil to paediatric patients for more than 3 days.

Overdose

Signs of overdose:

• diarrhea;
• colic (spasms in the intestines);
• violations of water and electrolyte metabolism, which can greatly affect the general condition (for example, muscle weakness due to hypokalemia);
• reduced blood supply to the intestinal mucosa;
• with prolonged use of too large doses, the kidneys are affected (nephrolithiasis) and secondary hyperaldosteronism develops.

Treatment for overdose consists of gastric lavage, taking enterosorbents, such as activated charcoal, and performing symptomatic treatment (antispasmodics, electrolyte solutions).
