Pharmacological action
Expectorant (mucolytic) drug. Ambroxol is an active metabolite of Bromhexinee, belongs to the benzylamine group of mucolytic substances.
Dilutes sputum by increasing the production and activity of hydrolytic enzymes that break down the bonds between mucopolysaccharides of sputum.
Improves the rheological properties of sputum, reducing its viscosity and adhesive properties, by stimulating the serous cells of the glands of the bronchial mucosa and normalizing the ratio of mucosal and serous components of sputum.
Increases mucociliary transport, increasing motor activity of the ciliated epithelium. It does not cause excessive secretion, reduces spastic hyperreactivity of the bronchi.
Promotes surfactant production.
The effect develops 30 minutes after taking the drug.
Indications
Inflammatory diseases of ENT organs (sinusitis, otitis media), which require dilution of mucus. Acute and chronic respiratory diseases accompanied by the formation of viscous sputum: bronchitis, bronchial asthma, COPD, pneumonia, bronchiectasis.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
The drug is contraindicated for use in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Ambroxol is excreted in breast milk, so if you need to use the drug during lactation, you should decide whether to stop breastfeeding.
Contraindications
- ulcerative lesions of the gastrointestinal tract;
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- lactation (breast-feeding);
- hypersensitivity to ambroxol or Bromhexinee;
- the drug in tablet form is not intended for use in children under 5 years of age.

Side effects
From the central nervous system: Â rarely-weakness, headache.
From the digestive system: Â rarely – diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, gastralgia, nausea, vomiting.
Respiratory system disorders:  rarely – dryness of the respiratory tract, rhinorrhea.
Allergic reactions: Â rarely-exanthema, urticaria; extremely rarely-acute anaphylactic reactions, the causal relationship of which with the use of ambroxol has not been established.
Other services: Â dysuria.
Interaction
Antitussive medications (including codeine) can make it difficult to produce sputum diluted with ambroxol.
Halixol ® promotes the penetration of certain antibiotics (including amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) into the bronchial secretions.
How to take, course of use and dosage
of Halixol is taken orally, after a meal, with a large amount of liquid (a large intake of liquid helps to dilute mucus during treatment with ambroxol). Syrup can be taken using a measuring cap.
Adults and children over 12 years of age — the usual daily dose in the first 2-3 days of treatment: 1 tablet 3 times a day, in the following days-1 tablet 2 times or 1/2 tablet 3 times a day. In severe cases of the disease, the dose is not reduced during the entire course of treatment.
Children under 5 years of age are recommended to take Halixol syrup.
Children aged 5-12 years — 1/2 tablet 2-3 times a day.
Overdose
Symptoms: Â nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia.
Treatment: Â induce vomiting, then prescribe a drink (milk or tea), taking fat-containing products. Gastric lavage is recommended within 1-2 hours after taking the drug. The function of the cardiovascular system should be constantly monitored.
Special instructions
It should not be administered simultaneously with antitussive medications due to difficulty in sputum production.
The use of the drug in patients with impaired motor function of the bronchi or copious sputum discharge with low viscosity requires caution due to the risk of stagnation of bronchial secretions.
The syrup contains non-specific sweeteners, sorbitol, sodium cyclamate, so patients with diabetes can use this drug, but the content of sorbitol (1.2 g per 5 ml) should be taken into account by patients with diabetes.
The drug does not contain alcohol.
