Composition

Hawthorn fruit 100 g; 70% ethyl alcohol for obtaining 1000 ml of tincture

Pharmacological action

Product of plant origin. Hawthorn fruits contain flavonoids (quercetin, hyperin, hyperoside, vitexin), organic acids (citric, oleic, ursolic, crategusic, caffeic, chlorogenic), carotenoids, tannins, fatty oils, pectins, triterpene and flavone glycosides, beta-sitosterol, choline, sugars, vitamins.

The active ingredients of hawthorn reduce the excitability of the central nervous system and heart muscle, increase the contractility of the latter, improve coronary and cerebral circulation, and eliminate dizziness. Hawthorn contributes to the normalization of the heart rate, which is supposed to be due to the mechanism of action characteristic of class III antiarrhythmics.

Due to the presence of triterpene compounds and flavonoids, it has an antispasmodic effect, selectively dilating the blood vessels of the heart and brain; hypotensive effect; promotes normalization of venous pressure, improves the function of vascular walls.

Experimental studies have shown that hawthorn galenic preparations and triterpene glycosides have a pronounced anti-atherosclerotic effect.

Indications

As part of complex therapy:

• atrial fibrillation;
• paroxysmal tachycardia (in mild forms in addition to treatment with the main antiarrhythmic drugs).
• functional disorders of the heart;

Contraindications

• The safety and efficacy of the drug in children have not been established, so it is not recommended to use the drug for children under 12 years of age without a doctor’s prescription.
• Regarding the possibility of using tincture during pregnancy and lactation, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
• Hypersensitivity to the plant.

Side effects

Possible:  allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, intestinal colic (when taken on an empty stomach), drowsiness, decreased blood pressure, bradycardia (with prolonged use).

Interaction

Hawthorn preparations enhance the effect of cardiac glycosides.

Concomitant use with class III antiarrhythmics and cisapride is not recommended.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside 15-20 drops 3 times a day before meals.
