Composition

Ichthyol ointment 10% in 100 g contains 10 g of ichthyol and 90 g of vaseline.

Ichthyol is a black-brown syrupy, thick liquid with an unpleasant taste and a pungent smell.

It is a product of special processing of shale oil, which is produced by distilling combustible shale minerals lying in the depths of the Volga region, containing many remains of fossil marine fish and shells of the Jurassic period with an organically bound sulfur content of at least 10.5%.

Ichthyol has a complex composition and contains ammonium salts of sulfonic acids. Produced in laminate tubes of 132 g

Pharmacological action

Ichthyol ointment has a local antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect, has a keratostatic and antipruritic effect.

Ichthyol ointment eliminates itching and softens the processes of keratinization of the skin, improves skin elasticity, enhances the processes of regeneration and metabolism in the skin and eliminates excessive peeling.

According to reviews, Ichthyol ointment has an anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect on the deep layers of soft tissues a few hours after application.

Indications

Ichthyol ointment is used for:

Burns, eczema, and erysipelas;

Infiltrative-suppurative form of microsporia and trichophytosis;

Streptoderma;

Hydradenite;

Arthritis and neuralgia of a traumatic and inflammatory nature;

Sun eczema and light pox, discoid lupus erythematosus, rosacea;

Boils;

Ostiofolliculitis;

Prostatitis;

Sycose.

Ichthyol ointment is indicated in the treatment of pelvic inflammatory diseases (oophoritis, salpingitis, parametritis, etc. ) 

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Ichthyol ointment is not recommended for individual intolerance or allergy to ichthyol.

Side effects

According to reviews, Ichthyol ointment practically does not cause side effects, allergic skin reactions are extremely rare. According to the instructions, Ichthyol ointment during pregnancy and lactation is used according to the doctor’s indications and prescription.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Ichthyol ointment is used both in pure form and in the form of a 10% glycerin lotion, for which equal volumes of glycerin and 20% ichthyol ointment are mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained.

According to the instructions, Ichthyol ointment is evenly distributed over the surface of the skin in places of inflammation and rubbed until a feeling of warmth appears.

For eczema, burns, arthritis, erysipelas and neuralgia, the site of the lesion after applying the ointment is covered with a gauze napkin and fixed with a plaster or bandage. Bandages should be changed daily. The amount of ointment applied for treatment depends on the size of the lesion.

Usually 2-4 g of Ichthyol ointment is enough to apply to the area of the sacrum or knee joint. Ichthyol ointment is indicated for staphyloderma and streptoderma. It is used in the form of applications of 10% glycerin lotions, covering the place of application with parchment paper under the bandage.

Change the dressing every few times a day. Ichthyol ointment is indicated for gynecological diseases. Apply in the form of tampons soaked in 10% glycerin solution, several times a day in the rectum after setting a cleansing enema or spontaneous bowel cleansing. Ichthyol ointment for boils and hydradenitis is used undiluted in the form of ichthyol cakes.

To do this, approximately 2 g of ointment should be applied to the boil and covered with a cotton swab. A tampon soaked in ichthyol should be firmly fixed on the surface of the skin with a patch.

Usually, improvement occurs within the first day. Tampons with ointment are changed every 8-10 hours. On the face with boils, it is better to use Ichthyol ointment diluted with glycerin in order to accidentally prevent contact with the mucous membranes and eyes.
