Pharmacological action

Magnesium sulfate-sedative, antispasmodic.

Pharmacodynamics

When administered parenterally, it has a depressing effect on the central nervous system. Depending on the dose, there may be a sedative, hypnotic or anaesthetic effect.

Magnesium sulfate has a depressing effect on neuromuscular transmission. Reduces the excitability of the respiratory center, in large doses with parenteral use can cause respiratory paralysis.

Lowers blood pressure, including due to the general calming effect (the effect is more pronounced in hypertension).

Magnesium sulfate is excreted by the kidneys, and diuresis increases during excretion.

Antagonists of the magnesium ion are calcium ions.

A decrease in the content of calcium in the blood is accompanied by an increase in the action of magnesium.

Indications

• hypertensive crisis;
• late toxicosis of pregnant women;
• convulsive syndrome.
• relief of epileptic status (as part of complex therapy).

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to the drug;
• AV block;
• hypotension;
• conditions accompanied by calcium deficiency, respiratory depression.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside.

Adults — 15-25 g 1 time a day on an empty stomach, after dissolving the drug in a glass of water (250 ml).

Children over 12 years of age — 10 g 1 time a day (per 1/2 cup of water).

Children aged 6-12 years — from 5 to 10 g (i. e. from half to the whole volume of the solution prepared at the rate of 10 g per 1/2 cup of water).

In children under 6 years of age, the drug can only be used as prescribed by a doctor.

Daily doses are determined at the rate of 1 g for 1 year of life.

It is possible to use the drug in the form of enemas (50-100 ml of 20-30% solution).

Overdose

Symptoms:  possible respiratory depression, depression of the central nervous system, up to the development of anesthesia.

Treatment:  as an antidote for an overdose of magnesium sulfate, calcium preparations are used-calcium chloride or calcium gluconate.
