Composition

Active ingredients:

Desogestrel 0.15 mg;

Ethinyl Estradiol 0.03 mg.

Potato starch;

Pharmacological action

Marvelon is a combined oral contraceptive. Each pill contains a small amount of two different female sex hormones – desogestrel (progestogen) and ethinyl estradiol (estrogen).

Due to the small amounts of hormones, Marvelon is classified as a low-dose oral contraceptive.

Since all tablets in a pack contain the same amount of the same hormones, Marvelon refers to monophasic combined oral contraceptives.

The drug also has an additional non-contraceptive pharmacological effect:

• Against the background of taking the drug, menstruation becomes less plentiful and painful;
• Women who take birth control pills are less likely to have anemia, certain diseases of the uterus, ovaries, and mammary glands;
• It has a beneficial effect on the skin, especially improving its condition in case of vulgar acne. After stopping taking the drug, the ability to conceive is quickly restored.

Indications

Contraception.

Contraindications

You should not take Marvelon if you have at least one of the diseases or conditions listed below. You should inform your doctor about this before making a decision about taking Marvelon:

• Thrombosis (venous or arterial) at present or in the anamnesis (including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, stroke);
• The presence at present or in the anamnesis of possible clinical manifestations of thrombosis (including ischemic disease or angina pectoris);
• Diabetes mellitus with vascular damage;
• the presence of severe or multiple risk factors for venous or arterial thrombosis (see “Side effect”);
• The presence of severe liver diseases at present or in the anamnesis (if liver function indicators have not returned to normal);
• The presence of current or previous liver tumors (benign and malignant);
• Established or suspected hormone-dependent malignant tumor of the genitals or mammary glands;
• Vaginal bleeding of unclear etiology;
• Established or expected pregnancy, lactation period;
• Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug;
• Migraine with focal neurological symptoms;
• Hypertriglyceridemia.

If the drug is used against the background of one of the following conditions, you may need regular medical supervision. Before you start taking the drug, be sure to inform your doctor about the following conditions/diseases: :

• You smoke.
• You suffer from migraines.
• You suffer from epilepsy;
• you have diabetes;
• you are overweight;
• you have high blood pressure;
• you have heart valve disease or heart rhythm disorders;
• you have venous inflammation (superficial thrombophlebitis);
• you have varicose veins;
• The closest relatives were thrombosis, myocardial infarction, or stroke;
• You or the next of kin increased or had elevated levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood;
• any of the next of kin was breast cancer;
• You have liver disease or gall bladder;
• You have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis (chronic inflammatory bowel disease);
• You have a systemic lupus erythematosus;
• You hemolytic uremic syndrome (bleeding disorder that causes kidney failure);
• You have sickle-cell anemia;
• You have or have had chloasma (yellowish-brown patches of pigmentation of the skin, mainly on the face). In this case, prolonged exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet radiation should be avoided.

Side effects

The following adverse reactions have been reported in individuals taking Marvelon: :

• Headache, gastralgia, nausea, vomiting;

• Soreness and engorgement of the mammary glands;

• Increased body weight, impaired glucose tolerance, fluid retention in the body;

• Changes in libido;

• Reduced mood;

• Swelling of the eyelids, skin rash, erythema nodosum, conjunctivitis, unpleasant sensations when wearing contact lenses;

• Thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism (may be manifested by impaired perception: visual impairment, hearing loss);

• Generalized pruritus.

• Cholestatic jaundice;

• Cholelithiasis;

• Increased blood pressure;

• Intermenstrual bleeding, changes in vaginal secretion may develop vaginal candidiasis.

• With prolonged use (extremely rare) – chloasma, hepatocellular adenoma.

They may occur in the first few months of using the drug and usually decrease with time.

Interaction

Interactions with certain medications can lead to heavy bleeding and ineffectiveness of oral contraceptives. Such cases have been observed with hydantoins, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine, rifampicin, isoniazid; they are possible with oxcarbamazepine, topiramate, felbamate and griseofulvin.

A decrease in the effectiveness of oral contraceptives was also observed when taking certain antibiotics, such as ampicillin, tetracycline, neomycin, penicillins, chloramphenicol, as well as activated charcoal, laxatives.

Marvelon reduces the effectiveness of oral anticoagulants, anxiolytics (diazepam), tricyclic antidepressants, theophylline, caffeine, hypoglycemic drugs, clofibrate, and glucocorticosteroids.

Always tell the doctor who prescribes birth control pills what medications you are already using. If your doctor prescribes other medications, tell them that you are taking Marvelon.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside, in the order indicated on the package, every day at approximately the same time, if necessary, with a small amount of water.

Take 1 tablet each. per day for 21 days. Taking tablets from the next package should be started 7 days after the end of the previous one. During these 7 days, menstrual-like bleeding occurs. It usually begins 2-3 days after taking the last pill and may not stop until you start taking the pill from the next package.

How to start taking Marvelon® if hormonal contraceptives have not been used in the last month

Taking pills should start on the 1st day of the menstrual cycle. You can start taking the drug 2-5 days after the start of the menstrual cycle, but in this case it is recommended to use an additional (non-hormonal) method of contraception during the first 7 days of taking tablets in the initial cycle.

Switching from other combined oral contraceptives

, it is advisable to start taking Marvelon® the day after taking the last tablet of a previously used drug containing hormones, in extreme cases immediately after a break in taking tablets or after taking a tablet that does not contain hormones.

Switching from progestogen-only medications (mini-pills, injections, implants)<wbr > A woman taking “mini-pili” can switch to taking Marvelon®on any day: using the implant — on the day of its removal; using the drug in the form of injections — on the day of the next injection. In all cases, during the first 7 days of taking Marvelon®, it is recommended to use additional methods of contraception.

After an abortion in the first trimester

, a woman can start taking the drug immediately. There is no need to use any additional methods of contraception.

After childbirth or abortion in the second trimester

It is recommended to start taking the drug on the 21st or 28th day after giving birth or having an abortion in the second trimester of pregnancy. When starting taking the drug at a later date, it is recommended to use barrier methods of contraception during the first 7 days of taking Marvelon®. In any case, if a woman has already had sexual contacts after giving birth or having an abortion before taking Marvelon®, pregnancy should be excluded before taking the drug or wait until the first menstruation.

The use of the drug is contraindicated during lactation.

If you miss the next dose of the drug

If the next pill is delayed for less than 12 hours, the reliability of contraception is not reduced. A woman should take a pill as soon as she remembers, and take subsequent pills at the usual time.

If the next pill is delayed for more than 12 hours, the reliability of contraception may be reduced. In this case, follow the following rules: :

1 week

A woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time. Then you should continue the reception according to the usual scheme. Additionally, you should use barrier contraception for the next 7 days. If a woman has had sexual contact within the previous 7 days, the possibility of pregnancy should be considered. The more pills missed, and the closer the break in taking the drug is to the time of sexual intercourse, the higher the risk of pregnancy.

2 week

A woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time. Then you should continue the reception according to the usual scheme. Provided that the woman took the pills on time during the 7 days preceding the first missed dose, there is no need to use additional (non-hormonal) methods of contraception. Otherwise, or if a woman has missed more than 1 tab., it is recommended to use additional methods of contraception for the next 7 days.

3 week

The reliability of contraception may be reduced due to a subsequent break in taking the drug. This can be avoided by adapting the medication regimen. If you use either of the following two regimens, there is no need for additional contraceptive measures, provided that the woman took the pills on time during the 7 days preceding the first missed dose.

Otherwise, it is recommended to use one of the following two schemes and additional contraceptive measures for the next 7 days.

A woman should take the missed pill as soon as she remembers it, even if it means taking 2 tablets at the same time. Then you should continue the reception according to the usual scheme. A new package should be started as soon as the current one ends, i. e. you should not take a break. The likelihood of withdrawal bleeding before the end of the second pack is low, but some may experience spotting or heavy spotting while still taking the drug.

You can recommend stopping taking the drug from the current package. A woman should take a break from taking Marvelon® for up to 7 days, including days when she forgot to take pills, and then start a new package.

If you miss taking the drug and then there is no bleeding in the next break in the reception, you should consider the possibility of pregnancy.

Recommendations in case of vomiting

If vomiting occurs within 3-4 hours after taking the drug, absorption may be incomplete. In this case, you should follow the recommendations regarding skipping the next dose of the drug. If a woman does not want to change her usual intake schedule, she will need to take an additional pill (s) from a different package.

How to change the time of menstruation

In order to delay menstruation, you should continue taking tablets from another package of Marvelon®without the usual break in reception. You can delay menstruation for any period until the end of tablets from the second package. During this period, a woman may experience smearing or profuse spotting. Taking the drug according to the usual scheme should be resumed after a 7-day interval in reception.

In order to shift menstruation to a day of the week other than what is expected with the usual schedule of admission, you can reduce the usual break in admission by as many days as necessary. The shorter the break, the higher the risk of missing menstruation during the break and the occurrence of heavy or smearing spotting while taking the drug from the second package.

Overdose

Serious consequences of taking a large number of Marvelon tablets have not been reported.

If you take several pills at once, you may experience nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

If you find that your child has swallowed a pill, contact your doctor.

Special instructions

In the process of using Marvelon, systematic medical examinations are shown.

The drug should be used with caution if there is a high risk of developing thrombosis, signs of heart failure, heart valve damage, atrial fibrillation, arterial hypertension, epilepsy, migraines, Crohn’s disease, sickle cell anemia.

Women who smoke over the age of 35 should stop smoking if they intend to use Marvelon for the purpose of contraception.

Estrogen-containing drugs may temporarily increase the risk of thrombosis in patients who have undergone surgery and prolonged immobilization.

In women with tumorous formations in the abdominal cavity and / or acute abdominal pain, the presence of hepatocellular adenoma should be excluded.

Women who have chloasma (when using estrogenic and / or progesterone-containing drugs) should avoid exposure to the sun.

The effectiveness of Marvelon may be reduced if you skip taking it, as well as with diarrhea and/or vomiting that occurred in the first 4 hours after taking the drug.
