Description

Medical gauze is a strong cotton fabric with a sparse structure, low weight and density, and high hygroscopicity. The purpose of gauze as a dressing material is to protect wounds from contamination. Gauze is also a material for insertion into wounds to suck out their discharge. Therefore, the gauze should be: a) chemically pure, i. e. consist as much as possible of one fiber; b) soft, free from solid particles that can mechanically damage or irritate injured tissues;c) hygroscopic, so as to easily and quickly absorb pus or blood;d) sterile. To ensure these properties, cheesecloth is prepared from purified skimmed and bleached yarn and secured by conventional methods of sterilization at high temperature in an autoclave.
