Milk thistle was known for its use in protecting the liver, even in ancient Rome. Currently, milk thistle is quite researched and widely used in many countries of the world, including in Russia. A unique combination of flavonoids found only in milk thistle is called silymarin.

Silymarin is one of the most well-known natural compounds that protects liver cells and helps maintain liver function.

Silymarin is a complex of milk thistle flavonoids (flavolignans), it is known for its ability to remove toxic substances both coming from outside and formed in the liver itself as a result of metabolism.

Silymarin’s ability to protect the liver is due to its antioxidant function and ability to strengthen cell membranes. Excessive accumulation of lipid peroxidation products is one of the main causes of reduced viability of liver cells (hepatocytes). This leads to a decrease in the strength of the lipid layer of cell membranes.

Silymarin prevents the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products and thereby increases the protection of liver cells. In addition, by stabilizing the cell membrane of hepatocytes, silymarin slows down the entry of toxic substances into them. Silymarin also supports the metabolism of the liver, resulting in even more active support for its functions.
