Composition

Active ingredient: Nonoxynol-9-9-120 mg; Excipients:  D -, L-Lactic acid, macrogol 4000 (polyethylene oxide), macrogol 1000 (polyethylene oxide).

Pharmacological action

Nopoxypol is a non-ionic surfactant, and its spermicidal action is caused by fragmentation and reduced sperm motility.

It has bactericidal activity against gonococci and chlamydia. It is active in vitro against HIV infections, but there are no clinical data on reducing the risk of HIV infection when using ponoxinol. Lactic acid has a beneficial effect on normal mycelium and vaginal mucosa.

When using a suppository, the concentration of ponoxinol in the vagina averages 1-1.7%, which is sufficient for the manifestation of spermicidal activity.

The spermicidal effect of the suppository occurs after its dissolution, approximately 10 minutes after insertion into the vagina, and lasts no more than 2 hours.

When using the drug, no foam is formed.

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to the components of the drug Nonoxynol-9;
• erosion of the cervix;
• salningoophoritis;
• colpitis;
• vaginitis;
• abnormalities of the vagina that make it difficult to use the drug.

Side effects

Rarely-dermatitis, itching, burning of a woman’s vagina or partner’s penis. The irritation usually goes away without taking special measures.

Interaction

Due to a possible decrease in spermicidal activity, Nonoxynol-9 is not recommended for use with other drugs intended for intravaginal use.

How to take, course of use and dosage

The suppository is inserted into the vagina as deep as possible, not less than 10 minutes and not earlier than 1 hour before the start of sexual intercourse. With repeated sexual intercourse, a new suppository is used according to the same scheme. After sexual intercourse for 6 hours, it is not recommended to perform a vaginal toilet in order to avoid losing the contraceptive effect.

Special instructions

If itching occurs, the use of the drug should be discontinued. With frequent use of suppositories, the likelihood of side effects increases. It can be used in combination with a condom.
