Pharmacological action
Lutein is a natural pigment belonging to the group of hydroxylated carotenoids-xanthophylls. In the tissues of the eye, lutein is unevenly distributed: the yellow spot of the retina contains up to 70% of lutein from its total content in the eye. In addition to the retina and underlying pigment epithelium, it is found in the choroid of the eye, iris, lens, and ciliary body. The concentration of lutein decreases exponentially from the center of the retina to its periphery. It is proved that about 50% of the pigment is concentrated in its central zone with angular dimensions from 0.25 to 2.0. Lutein is the main component of the antioxidant eye protection system. Lutein plays an important role in the physiology of vision, performing two main functions necessary for the normal functioning of the eye: Increasing visual acuity by reducing chromatic aberrations, that is, filtering the visually inefficient part of the spectrum before it hits the photoreceptors (eliminating the “aberration halo”), which provides greater clarity of vision; Photoprotection. The flux of the most aggressive part of the visible spectrum — blue-violet, which corresponds to the absorption range of lutein-decreases. Lutein also provides protection against free radicals formed when direct light enters the eye. Lutein deficiency leads to retinal degeneration and gradual loss of vision Zeaxanthin — one of the main pigments of the carotenoid group (xanthophyll), is an isomer of lutein and is close to it in its biological activity. Lycopene, a carotenoid pigment, is a non-cyclic isomer of beta-carotene. The oxidation product of lycopene-2,6-cyclolycopene-1,5-diol was detected in the human retina. High levels of lycopene are found not only in the retinal pigment epithelium, but also in the ciliary body. The retina is an almost transparent tissue, so the pigment epithelium and choroid are exposed to light, and carotenoids, including lycopene, also play a role in protecting against light-induced damage. Lycopene, as a non-specific antioxidant, slows down peroxidation processes in tissues, including the lens. In a clinical study, an inverse relationship was found between the content of lycopene in the blood and the risk of developing cataracts. Taurine is a sulfonic acid formed in the body from the amino acid cysteine. Taurine has retinoprotective, anti-cataract, and metabolic effects. In diseases of a dystrophic nature, it contributes to the normalization of metabolic processes in the tissues of the eye. Vitamin A-retinol (vitamin A1, axerophthol). Vitamin A in the form of retinal plays an important role in regulating vision function. 11-Cis-retinal binds to opsin proteins to form the purple – red color pigments rhodopsin or one of the three types of iodopsin-the main visual pigments involved in creating a visual signal. With a lack of vitamin A, various epithelial lesions develop, vision worsens, and corneal wetting is disrupted. Vitamins C, E-have a high antioxidant activity. Rutin (rutoside, quercetin-Z-O-rutinoside, sophorin) is a glycoside of the flavonoid quercetin, which has P-vitamin activity. This flavonoid reduces the permeability and fragility of capillaries, including the eyeball. Zinc — one of the most important trace elements-is involved in the biochemical processes occurring in the retina of the eye, and also contributes to the absorption of vitamin A, which is necessary for maintaining vision. Zinc deficiency disrupts the absorption of glucose by the lens cells of the eye and contributes to the formation of cataracts, as well as increases the risk of macular degeneration. Chromium is one of the most important trace elements, and its deficiency, especially in patients with diabetes, can worsen vision problems. Selenium is a trace element that is also involved in photochemical processes that regulate the function of vision. Anthocyanosides-activate blood microcirculation and metabolism at the tissue level, reduce the fragility of capillaries, strengthen vascular walls, increase their elasticity, improve the enzymatic activity of the retina, restore the photosensitive pigment rhodopsin, increase adaptation to different light levels and enhance visual acuity at dusk. Ginkgo biloba-has an antioxidant and antihypoxic effect, improves cerebral circulation, reduces the risk of blood clots and reduces capillary permeability, slows down the development of diabetic retinopathy, and pathological changes associated with peripheral tissue ischemia.
Indications
Helps maintain the functional state of the visual organ and normalize metabolic processes in the eye tissues in conditions of increased visual load and visual fatigue, with intense exposure to light and increased UV radiation, when wearing contact lenses and glasses;for the prevention of the development/ progression of retinal diseases, glaucoma and cataracts. It is recommended as a source of lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, taurine, rutin, an additional source of vitamins A, E, C, zinc, chromium, selenium, contains flavonols and anthocyanins
