Progesterone is a progestogen. Yellow body hormone. Causes the transition of the uterine mucosa from the proliferation phase caused by follicular hormone to the secretory phase, and after fertilization contributes to its transition to the state necessary for the development of a fertilized egg.
Reduces excitability and contractility of the uterine and fallopian tube muscles, stimulates the development of the terminal elements of the breast. It has no androgenic activity.
Progesterone has a weak effect on protein metabolism, promotes fat deposition and glucose accumulation in the liver, and also reduces sodium reabsorption in the renal tubules.
Progesterone has a blocking effect on the secretion of hypothalamic LH and FSH release factors, inhibits the formation of gonadotropin hormones in the pituitary gland and inhibits ovulation.
Pharmacokinetics
After intravenous injection, it is absorbed quickly and almost completely. It is metabolized in the liver, and most of its metabolites form conjugates with glucuronic and sulfuric acids.
T1 / 2 of plasma is a few minutes. It is excreted in the urine-50-60% and with feces-more than 10%. The amount of metabolites that are excreted in the urine varies depending on the phase of the corpus luteum.
