Pharmacological action
Pharmacodynamics
A topical antacid drug. Contains calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, which provide rapid and long-lasting neutralization of excess hydrochloric acid in gastric juice, thereby exerting a protective effect on the gastric mucosa.
The achievement of the therapeutic effect within 3-5 minutes is due to the good solubility of the tablets and the high calcium content.
Pharmacodynamics
Suction
As a result of the interaction of Rennie® with gastric juice, soluble calcium and magnesium salts are formed in the stomach. The level of absorption of calcium and magnesium from these compounds depends on the dose of the drug. The maximum level of absorption is 10% calcium and 15-20% magnesium.
Deduction
A small amount of absorbed calcium and magnesium is excreted by the kidneys. In the intestine, insoluble compounds are formed from soluble salts, which are excreted in the feces.
Pharmacokinetics in special clinical cases
If renal function is impaired, plasma calcium and magnesium concentrations may increase.
Indications
Symptoms associated with increased acidity of gastric juice and reflux esophagitis (including those caused by errors in diet, medication, alcohol abuse, coffee, nicotine): heartburn, belching, periodic pain in the stomach, a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the epigastric region, flatulence, dyspepsia, dyspepsia of pregnant women.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
When used in the recommended doses, the drug does not pose a danger to the fetus or child.
Contraindications
- Severe renal insufficiency;
- hypercalcemia;
- hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Side effects
Allergic reactions: in very rare cases, rash, angioedema, anaphylactic reactions are possible.
If the recommended doses are met, the drug is well tolerated.
Interaction
Medications should be taken 1-2 hours before or after taking antacids.
When used concomitantly, Rennie ® reduces the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, and phosphates.
Anticholinergic drugs enhance and prolong the effect of Rennie ®, slowing down gastric emptying.
When used concomitantly, Rennie ® enhances the action of sulfadiazine, levodopa, acetylsalicylic acid and nalidixic acid.
How to take, course of use and dosage
Adults and children over 12 years of age: if the doctor does not recommend otherwise, chew 1-2 tablets or keep them in your mouth until completely absorbed.
If necessary, you can repeat the drug after 2 hours.
The maximum daily dose is 16 tablets.
Overdose
Symptoms: increased previously described side effects.
Treatment: symptomatic.
Special instructions
Use in patients with impaired renal function
The drug is contraindicated in severe renal failure.
Patients with impaired renal function are not recommended to take the drug for a long time in high doses. When prescribing the drug to patients with impaired renal function, the concentration of magnesium and calcium in the blood serum should be regularly monitored. High-dose use of Rennie ® may increase the risk of kidney stones.
