Laxative preparation of plant origin (senna leaf or Alexandrian leaf, or cassia holly leaf).
The pharmacological action is due to anthraglycosides (mainly sennosides A and B), as well as other glycosides. When applied orally, senna glycosides pass through the stomach and small intestine unchanged, without being absorbed.
In the large intestine, anthraglycosides are broken down by intestinal bacteria into pharmacologically active anthrons and anthranols, which irritate the colon’s interoreceptors, increase peristalsis, and accelerate bowel emptying.
Anthrones and anthranols prevent the absorption of water and electrolytes, promote the diffusion of water into the intestinal lumen. Due to the osmotic effect, the fecal masses are loosened and their volume increases, which contributes to the laxative effect of anthraglycosides.
The laxative effect manifests itself in 6 – 10 hours. With prolonged use of the drug, the intensity of its action may decrease due to a decrease in the potassium content in the body.
The drug is well tolerated by patients, due to the low content of resinous substances, it does not irritate the intestines.
Ease of bowel movement when:
The use of the drug in pregnant women is associated with a higher probability of side effects (abdominal pain, diarrhea).
During treatment with the drug, breast-feeding is recommended to stop, because the components of the drug can penetrate into breast milk and cause frequent loose stools in the baby.
With caution:
Taking Senadexin may lead to hematuria, proteinuria, hypokalemia, intestinal melanosis, flatulence, urine discoloration, dyspeptic disorders, skin rash, fatigue, seizures, vascular collapse, water-electrolyte imbalance, and confusion.
With prolonged use or use in high doses, the drug increases the effect of cardiac glycosides and antiarrhythmic agents due to a decrease in the potassium content in the body and disrupts the absorption of tetracyclines.
When used concomitantly with thiazide diuretics, adrenal cortex hormones, licorice root preparations, the risk of hypokalemia increases.
Reduces the effectiveness of drugs that are slowly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract.
Senadexin is taken before bedtime.
Adults and children over 12 years of age: 1/2-1 cube of lozenges or 1-2 tablets. In the absence of an effect, the dosage of the drug is increased to 3 tablets per reception (a few days after the first reception).
Children 1-6 years old are prescribed 1/3 tablets. Children 6-12 years – half the adult dosage.
Symptoms: if overdosed, diarrhea may develop, leading to impaired water and electrolyte balance.
Treatment: symptomatic. You should stop taking the drug.
Long-term use of Senadexine leads to dehydration, diarrhea with metabolic syndrome, colon atony, and digestive disorders.
In some cases, it reduces the speed of psychomotor reactions (depending on individual characteristics).
