Pharmacological action
It has antiseptic, disinfectant, antifungal and antiprotozoal effects.
Blocks amino groups of cellular proteins.
It has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action.
Active against bacteria (including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus), fungi, viruses, protozoa.
Released from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone upon contact with the skin and mucous membranes, iodine forms iodamines with bacterial cell proteins, coagulates them and causes the death of microorganisms.
It has a rapid bactericidal effect on gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (with the exception of M. tuberculosis).
Pharmacokinetics.
When applied topically, there is almost no reabsorption of iodine from the mucous membrane.
Indications
-acute and chronic vaginitis (mixed, non-specific infections); – acute and chronic vaginitis (mixed, non – specific infections); – bacterial vaginosis; – candidiasis; – trichomoniasis; – genital herpes.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Betadine is not recommended for use from 3 months of pregnancy and during lactation.
If it is necessary to conduct therapy, the doctor decides on the appointment of the drug individually.
It is necessary to monitor the thyroid function in newborns and children whose mothers used Betadine.
Contraindications
-hyperthyroidism; – thyroid adenoma; – Duhring’s herpetiform dermatitis; – simultaneous use of radioactive iodine – – children under 8 years of age; – hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug. The drug should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding).
Side effects
Possible: Â local manifestation of an allergic reaction to iodine (pruritus, hyperemia), which requires discontinuation of the drug.
Interaction
Betadine is incompatible with other disinfectants and antiseptics, especially those containing alkalis, enzymes and mercury.
How to take, course of use and dosage
After preliminary hygienic treatment, suppositories are inserted deep into the vagina.
In acute vaginitis,1 vaginal suppository is prescribed 2 times / day for 7 days.
For subacute and chronic vaginitis,1 suppository is prescribed 1 time/day before bedtime for 14 days.
If necessary, the course of treatment can be extended.
Special instructions
During the use of suppositories, the use of sanitary pads can be recommended.
Use in pediatrics: It is possible to use in girls aged 8 years and older, using caution when administered to virgins.
