Pharmacological action

pharmacokineticapritical application penetrates into the tissues and fluids of the eye. It is absorbed into the systemic circulation through the inflamed conjunctiva. Antibacterial agent for topical use in ophthalmology, a derivative of sulfonamide. It has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action. It has a bacteriostatic effect. The mechanism of action is associated with competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase by competitive antagonism with PABA, which leads to a violation of the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid, which is necessary for the synthesis of pyrimidines and purines. Sulfacetamide is active against gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including pathogenic cocci, Escherichia coli), Chlamydia spp., Actinomyces spp.

Indications

Conjunctivitis, purulent corneal ulcers, blepharitis, prevention of blennorrhea in newborns, gonorrheal eye diseases in newborns and adults.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide and other sulfonamide preparations.

Side effects

When used, there may be such reactions: redness, itching, swelling.

Interaction

Sulfacetamide is incompatible with silver salts when applied topically.

How to take, course of use and dosage

To prevent blennorrhea in newborns,2 drops of the solution are instilled into the eyes immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours. Apply 2-3 drops in the lower conjunctival sac of each eye 5-6 times / day.

Overdose

Sometimes an overdose of the drug is caused by too frequent instillation of sodium Sulfacyl, which manifests itself in the form of increased symptoms of eye irritation (pain and burning in the eye, foreign body sensation, lacrimation, itching). If these symptoms occur, you should reduce the frequency of application of drops, using a solution of a lower concentration.

Special instructions

Patients with hypersensitivity to thiazide diuretics, furosemide, sulfonylurea, or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors may be hypersensitive to sulfacetamide.
