Tobradex is a combination drug.
Tobramycin is an antibiotic of the aminoglycoside produced by Streptococcus tenebrarius, has a wide spectrum antibacterial action, active against gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms: staphylococci (including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis), including strains resistant to penicillin; streptococci, including some beta-hemolytic species of the group And, negeroicheskie species, and some Streptococcus pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus mirabilis, Morganella morganii, most species Proteus vulgaris, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus aegyptius, Moraxella lacunata, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, certain species of Neisseria.
Dexamethasone — corticosteroids. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and desensitizing effects. It has an anti-exudative effect. Dexamethasone actively suppresses inflammatory processes.
The combination of corticosteroids with an antibiotic (tobramycin) reduces the risk of infection.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, systemic absorption is low.
There is no sufficient experience with the use of Tobradex during pregnancy and lactation.
It can be used for the treatment of pregnant women as prescribed by the attending physician, if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects.
You should stop using the drug for the period of breast-feeding.
Hypersensitivity and allergic reactions (itching, swelling of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia).
Side effects caused by the steroid component: increased intraocular pressure; posterior subcapsular cataract, slowing of the wound healing process.
Secondary infection. The development of secondary infection is observed after the use of combined drugs containing corticosteroids in combination with antibiotics.
Fungal infections on the cornea tend to occur especially frequently with prolonged steroid use.
The appearance of non-healing ulcers on the cornea after prolonged treatment with steroid drugs may indicate the development of fungal invasion. Secondary bacterial infection can occur as a result of suppressing the protective reaction of the patient’s body.
In the case of use with other topical ophthalmic medications, the interval between their use should be at least 5 minutes.
If tobramycin is administered topically simultaneously with systemic aminoglycoside antibiotics, the overall blood picture should be monitored.
