Tobrex eye drops contain tobramycin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. The bactericidal effect of the drug extends to Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, and diphtheria bacteria.
At low concentrations, it acts bacteriostatically (blocks the 30S subunit of ribosomes and disrupts protein synthesis), and at higher concentrations, it acts bactericidal (disrupts the function of cytoplasmic membranes, causing microbial cell death).
Highly active against Staphylococcus spp. (including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis (coagulase-negative and coagulase-positive), as well as penicillin-resistant strains); Streptococcus spp. (including α-β-hemolytic species, some non-hemolytic species, Streptococcus pneumoniae); Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Proteus mirabilis (indole-negative) and indole-positive species Proteus spp., Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus aegyptius, Moraxella lacunata, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (Herellea vaginacola), some species of Neisseria spp. (including Neisseria gonorrhoeae).
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, systemic absorption is low.
Infections of the eye and its appendages: – blepharitis;- conjunctivitis;- keratoconjunctivitis;- blepharoconjunctivitis;- keratitis;- iridocyclitis. Prevention of postoperative infections.
There is no sufficient experience with the use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding). It is possible to use Tobrex eye drops in pregnant women and nursing mothers if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the potential risk of side effects.
Use in children
There is no sufficient experience in using Tobrex eye drops in children. It is possible to use the drug in children if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the potential risk of side effects.
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug.
Local users. Allergic reaction, accompanied by itching and swelling of the eyelids, conjunctival hyperemia, lacrimation. There may be a burning sensation and a foreign body sensation in the eye.
If tobramycin is co-administered topically with systemic aminoglycoside antibiotics, systemic side effects may increase.
Locally. Eye drops: With a mild infectious process,1-2 drops in the conjunctival sac every 4 hours. In acute severe infectious process,2 drops in the conjunctival sac every 60 minutes, with a decrease in the frequency of instillation of the drug as the inflammatory phenomena decrease.
Symptoms: pinpoint keratitis, erythema, increased lacrimation, itching and swelling of the eyelid. Treatment is symptomatic.
Contact lenses should not be worn during treatment with the drug.
Long-term use of Tobrex eye drops, as with other antibiotics, can lead to increased growth of non-susceptible microorganisms (including fungi). It is recommended to do seeding before and after the end of treatment, if the clinical result is unsatisfactory.
Influence on the ability to drive motor vehicles and manage mechanisms
It is not recommended to drive a car or work with complex machinery, machines, or any other complex equipment that requires clear vision for patients who have temporarily impaired visual clarity after instillation of Tobrex.
