Composition

Active ingredient:  

dioctahedral smectite of 3 g.

Auxiliary substances:  

dextrose monohydrate,

sodium saccharinate,

vanillin.

Pharmacological action

Smecta is not absorbed. It is excreted unchanged from the body.

Antidiarrheal drug of natural origin. It has an adsorbing effect.

Stabilizes the mucosal barrier, forms polyvalent bonds with mucus glycoproteins, increases the amount of mucus and improves its gastroprotective properties (against the negative effects of hydrogen ions of hydrochloric acid, bile salts, microorganisms and their toxins).

Smecta has selective sorption properties, which are explained by its discoid-crystal structure; it adsorbs bacteria and viruses located in the gastrointestinal tract lumen. Smecta in therapeutic doses does not affect intestinal motility.

Indications

• Acute and chronic diarrhea (allergic, drug-induced, with a violation of the diet and quality of food);
• diarrhea of infectious origin (as part of complex therapy);
• symptomatic treatment of heartburn, bloating and abdominal discomfort in gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, colitis.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Smekta is approved for use in pregnant and lactating women. Dosage and dosage regimen adjustments are not required.

Contraindications

Fructose intolerance; hypersensitivity;intestinal obstruction; sucrose-isomaltase deficiency; glucose-galactose malabsorption. With caution: a history of severe chronic constipation.

Side effects

Rare cases of constipation have been reported in clinical trials. In all cases, this phenomenon was weakly expressed and passed after individual changes in the dosage regimen.

In routine practice: hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria, rash, pruritus or angioedema, have been reported in very rare cases.

Interaction

The drug may reduce the rate and degree of absorption of concomitantly taken medications. It is not recommended to take Smecta at the same time as other medications.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Before taking, the contents of 1 sachet should be dissolved in half a glass of water, gradually pouring the powder and stirring it evenly.

Children, including infants:

• up to 1 year – 1 sachet per day;
• 1-2 years-1-2 sachets per day;
• older than 2 years-2-3 sachets per day.

Adults 3 sachets per day.

The recommended course of treatment is 3-7 days.

For esophagitis, Smecta should be taken orally after a meal, for other indications-between meals.

Overdose

Overdose can cause severe constipation.

Special instructions

It is recommended to observe an interval of 1-2 hours between taking Smecta and other medications.

Use with caution in patients with a history of severe chronic constipation.

In children with acute diarrhea, the drug should be used in combination with rehydration measures.

A set of rehydration measures is prescribed depending on the course of the disease, age and characteristics of the patient.
