Pharmacological action

Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity, causes narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, eliminating edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, restores patency of the nasal passages, facilitates nasal breathing.

The effect of the drug occurs 5-10 minutes after its application and lasts up to 12 hours.

Indications

• acute respiratory diseases with rhinitis (runny nose);
• acute allergic rhinitis, pollinosis, sinusitis, eustachiitis, otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa);
• to facilitate rhinoscopy and other diagnostic manipulations in the nasal passages.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Contraindicated in pregnancy, with caution breast-feeding.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity;
• arterial hypertension;
• tachycardia;
• severe atherosclerosis;
• glaucoma;
• atrophic rhinitis;
• thyrotoxicosis;
• surgical interventions on the meninges (in the anamnesis);
• pregnancy;
• children under 6 years of age (for 0.1% solution);
• children under 2 years of age (for 0.05% solution).

With caution: lactation, coronary heart disease (angina pectoris), prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes mellitus.

Side effects

Classification of the frequency of adverse reactions: very common (> 1/10); common (>>1/100 to >><1/10); infrequent (> 1/1000 to <1/10); infrequent (><1/100); rare (> 1/10 000 to <1/100); rare (><1/1000); very rare (From the immune system: Very rare: hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, rash, pruritus). Nervous system disorders: Common: headache. Rarely: insomnia, depression (with prolonged use in high doses). Very rare: anxiety, fatigue, paresthesia, hallucinations, and seizures (mostly in children). From the side of the senses: Very rare: violation of the clarity of visual perception. From the cardiovascular system: Rare: palpitations, increased blood pressure. Very rare: tachycardia, arrhythmia. Respiratory system disorders: Common: irritation and / or dryness of the nasal mucosa, burning, tingling, sneezing, hypersecretion of the nasopharyngeal mucosa. Rarely: after using the drug, there may be increased swelling of the nasal mucosa (reactive hyperemia), nosebleeds. From the digestive system: Often: nausea. Rare: vomiting. Local reactions: Often: burning sensation at the site of application. If you experience any of the side effects listed in the instructions or they get worse, or you notice any other side effects not listed in the instructions, tell your doctor.

Interaction

Concomitant use of xylometazoline with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants, other local vasoconstrictors (decongestants), as well as other drugs that increase blood pressure, can lead to an increase in blood pressure, so the simultaneous use of these drugs is contraindicated. If you are using the above or other medications (including over-the-counter medications), consult your doctor before using Snoop®.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Intranasally.

Snoop ® nasal spray 0.05%

Children aged 2 to 6 years,1 injection in each nostril (if necessary, you can repeat), up to three times a day.

Adults and children from 6 years of age,2 injections in each nostril, up to three times a day.

The drug should not be used more than 3 times a day, the course duration should not exceed 7 days.

Before use, it is necessary to clean the nasal passages.

Remove the protective cap. Before the first application, press the rim of the spray nozzle several times until a uniform cloud of “fog” appears. The bottle with the drug is ready for further use.

When using the nozzle, insert it into the nasal cavity and press the rim once. Keep the bottle upright.

Do not spray horizontally or downwards. Immediately after the injection, it is recommended to take a light breath through the nose. After use, close the bottle with a protective cap.

Each bottle should be used individually.

After the end of therapy, the drug can be prescribed again only after a few days.

Consult your doctor about the duration of use in children.

In the case of chronic rhinitis, Snoop® 0.05% and 0.1% can only be used under the supervision of a doctor, taking into account the risk of atrophy of the nasal mucosa.

If there is no improvement after treatment, or if the symptoms worsen or new symptoms appear, you should consult your doctor.

Use the drug only according to the indications, the method of use and in the doses indicated in the instructions.

Overdose

Symptoms:

In case of overdose of the drug, the clinical picture is an alternation of phases of excitation of the central nervous system (anxiety, agitation, hallucinations, convulsions) with phases of depression of the central nervous system (decrease in body temperature, lethargy, drowsiness, coma).

You may also experience the following symptoms: :  

miosis, mydriasis, increased sweating, increased body temperature, pallor, cyanosis, nausea and vomiting, tachycardia, bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, palpitations, increased blood

pressure, decreased blood pressure up to shock, pulmonary edema, respiratory depression and apnea, psychogenic disorders.

In children with overdose, dominant central effects are observed with seizures, coma and bradycardia, apnea, as well as increased blood pressure, followed by hypotension.

Treatment:

Symptomatic, under the supervision of a doctor.

In case of accidental ingestion of the drug – the introduction of activated charcoal, gastric lavage.

In case of severe overdose, intensive care in a hospital is indicated.

In serious cases, non-selective alpha-blockers may be used to lower blood pressure, antipyretics, intubation, and artificial ventilation.

Special instructions

Sea water, which is part of the preparation, helps maintain the normal physiological state of the nasal mucosa due to its ability to improve the function of the ciliated epithelium and normalize the production of mucus in the goblet cells of the mucous membrane.

It is not recommended to use continuously for more than 7 days.

Do not exceed the recommended dose, especially in children and the elderly.

Prolonged (more than 7 days) use or overdose of xylometazoline may cause a weakening of the therapeutic effect of the drug, and also increases the risk of reactive hyperemia and atrophy of the nasal mucosa.

Effect on the ability to drive vehicles and work with mechanisms: if the dosage regimen is observed, xylometazoline does not affect the concentration of attention and the speed of psychomotor reactions.

Storage conditions

At a temperature not exceeding 25°C. After opening the bottle, the drug should be used for 12 months. Keep out of reach of children.

Shelf

life is 5 years. The contents of the bottle are sterile, without preservatives. Do not use after the expiration date. If the product has expired, do not dispose of it in the waste water or on the street!Place the medicine in the trash container. These measures will help protect the environment.
