Pharmacological action

Vitamin K, or anti-hemorrhagic vitamin, is essential for normal blood clotting. It is used for severe bleeding, hemorrhagic diathesis (a condition where the skin becomes covered with dark spots as a result of blood loss by capillaries) and in some cases liver function disorders. Often, vitamin K is prescribed to pregnant women for prevention purposes, to prevent the death of newborns from bleeding. Sometimes it is administered for the purpose of prevention to women before childbirth or surgery. Vitamin K is necessary as a means of increasing blood clotting, and more precisely – for the formation of pro-thrombin, which usually occurs in the liver, if it is healthy. Micro-organisms in our body produce sufficient amounts of this vitamin, but when liver function is impaired or with prolonged use of medications, especially sulfonamide or salicylic drugs, this does not happen. Vitamin K also plays an important role in the formation and repair of bones, provides the synthesis of osteocalcin-a bone protein on which calcium crystallizes. It helps prevent osteoporosis, participates in the regulation of redox processes in the body.
