Pharmacological action
Pharmaceutical group:
antimicrobial agent – sulfonamide.
Pharmaceutical action:
The drug Sulgin when taken orally has an antimicrobial effect. Blocks the absorption of paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA) and prevents its incorporation into the dihydrofolic acid molecule (inhibits the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase), reduces the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid and the synthesis of purine and pyrimidine bases of nucleic acids involved in the growth and development of microorganisms.
Sulfaguanidine has a bacteriostatic effect on Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Staphylococcus, Meningococcus, Eschericha coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella dysenteriae, Vulgaris Proteus.
Indications
Intestinal infections.

Interaction
Reduces the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. Benzocaine, procaine, anaesthesine, novocaine reduce the antimicrobial activity of sulgin (when hydrolyzed, PABA is released).
Antidiabetic drugs (sulfonylureas), diphenine, coumarin anticoagulants increase the side effects of sulgin.
The combined use of sulgin with hexamethylenetetramine and ascorbic acid increases the likelihood of crystalluria (increase the acidity of urine).
How to take, course of use and dosage
In acute intestinal infections, a single dose for adults is 1-2 g; multiplicity of use: day 1-6 times, day 2-3-5 times, day 4-4 times, day 5-3 times/day.
The course of treatment is 5-7 days. Children under 3 years – 200 mg / kg / day in 3 doses for 7 days; children over 3 years-400-750 mg (depending on age) 4 times/day.
To prevent postoperative complications: 50 mg / kg every 8 hours for 5 preoperative days and at the same dose for 7 days after surgery.
