Composition

Active ingredient:

betahistine dihydrochloride 24 mg;

Auxiliary substances:

lactose monohydrate (milk sugar);

microcrystalline cellulose;

potato starch;

copovidone;

sodium carboxymethyl starch;

colloidal silicon dioxide;

magnesium stearate.

Pharmacological action

Vesticap is a synthetic analog of histamine. Betahistine acts mainly on histamine H1 and H3 receptors of the inner ear and vestibular nuclei of the central nervous system.

By direct agonistic action on the H1-receptors of the inner ear vessels, as well as indirectly on the H3-histamine receptors of the vestibular nuclei of the central nervous system; improves microcirculation and capillary permeability, normalizes endolymph pressure in the labyrinth and cochlea.

At the same time, betahistine increases blood flow in the basilar artery. Accelerates the recovery of vestibular function after unilateral vestibular neurectomy, accelerating and facilitating central vestibular compensation (due to antagonism with H3-histamine receptors). It has a pronounced central effect, being an inhibitor of H3 – receptors of the vestibular nerve nuclei. Dose-dependently reduces the generation of action potentials in neurons of the lateral and medial vestibular nuclei.

Relieves symptoms of Meniere’s syndrome and vestibular vertigo. A stable therapeutic effect occurs after 14 days.

Pharmacokinetics

Suction and distribution

After oral use, betahistine is rapidly absorbed, and its binding to plasma proteins is low. The time to reach Cmax in plasma is 3 hours.

Metabolism and elimination

It is metabolized to inactive metabolites: 2-pyridylacetic acid (the main metabolite) and demethylbetahistine.

85-90% is excreted by the kidneys as 2-pyridylacetic acid within 24 hours. Renal excretion of betahistine and demethylbetahistine is negligible. Only a small portion of betahistine and its metabolites are excreted through the intestine.

Indications

Treatment of Meniere’s syndrome, characterized by dizziness (accompanied by nausea and vomiting), hearing loss and tinnitus; symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo (vertigo).

Contraindications

• hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug;
• pregnancy;
• lactation period (due to lack of data);
• childhood;
• lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome.

With caution:  peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum (including in the anamnesis), pheochromocytoma, bronchial asthma. Patients in these groups should be monitored regularly during treatment.

Side effects

From the digestive system:  nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, dyspepsia.

From the side of the skin:  angioedema, urticaria, pruritus, rash.

Allergic reactions:  hypersensitivity, including anaphylactic reactions.

Interaction

Currently, there are no data on the drug interaction of betahistine.

How to take, course of use and dosage

Inside, while eating.

A single dose of Vesticap is 8-16 mg, the frequency of use is 3 times a day.

Improvement is usually noted already at the beginning of therapy, a stable therapeutic effect occurs after two weeks of treatment and can increase over several months of treatment. Long-term treatment. The duration of taking the drug is selected individually.

Overdose

Symptoms:  nausea, abdominal pain, drowsiness (when taken at a dose of up to 640 mg); convulsions, cardiovascular complications (when taken at a dose of more than 640 mg or in combination with other medications).

Treatment:  symptomatic.

Special instructions

The therapeutic effect in some cases increases within a few months from the start of treatment.

Influence on the ability to drive motor vehicles and manage mechanisms

Betahistine has no sedative effect and does not affect the ability to drive a car or engage in activities that require rapid psychomotor reactions.
