Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Water for injection has no pharmacological activity. The solvent is used for the preparation of infusion and injection solutions, providing optimal conditions for the compatibility and effectiveness of substrates and water.

Pharmacokinetics

With the introduction of constantly alternating water and electrolytes, homeostasis is maintained by the kidneys.

Indications

Dissolution and dilution of medicinal products for their parenteral (injection/infusion) use immediately before use. It is used for the preparation of sterile infusion and injection solutions from powders, lyophilizates and concentrates.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

The drug is not contraindicated for use during pregnancy and lactation.

Contraindications

Do not use for dissolving or diluting medicinal products for which a different solvent is specified as mandatory.

Interaction

When mixing with other medicinal products, visual compatibility checks are required (pharmaceutical incompatibilities may occur).

The interaction of the dissolved/diluted medicinal product with other medicinal products should be taken into account.

How to take, course of use and dosage

The method of use, dose and rate of use are determined by the instructions for use of soluble / dilutable drugs in each specific case. Preparation of drug solutions with the use of water for injection is carried out under aseptic conditions (opening ampoules, filling the syringe and containers with medicines).

Overdose

After the introduction of large volumes of hypotonic solutions, in which water for injection was used as a solvent/diluent, hemolysis may develop.

Signs and symptoms of overdose will also be related to the properties of the dissolved / diluted drug. In case of accidental overdose, treatment should be discontinued and the patient should be examined for appropriate signs and symptoms associated with the use of the dissolved/diluted drug.

Special instructions

Do not mix with water oil solutions for injection, external means for moxibustion. Medicinal products, the concentration of which should be within certain limits, are diluted with water for injection only within the specified limits. Water for injection cannot be directly administered intravessularly due to low osmotic pressure (risk of hemolysis!). Special control over the amount of injectable solutions prepared using water for injection is required in newborns and young children, in whom even with the introduction of small volumes, violations of the water-electrolyte balance are possible.

Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms

The use of the drug does not affect the ability to perform potentially dangerous activities that require increased concentration of attention and speed of psychomotor reactions (driving vehicles, working with moving mechanisms, working as a dispatcher and operator).

Store at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C.
