Composition
>1 ml of the solution contains: Active ingredient: Â xylometazoline hydrochloride-0.0005 g or 0.001 g; excipients: benzalkonium chloride (in terms of anhydrous), disodium edetate (trilon B), potassium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium hydrophosphate dodecahydrate, sodium chloride, purified water.
Pharmacological action
Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity, causes narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, restores patency of the nasal passages, facilitates nasal breathing. The effect of the drug occurs a few minutes after its application and lasts up to 10 hours.
Pharmacokinetics:
 When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, so its concentration in blood plasma is very low (it is not determined by modern analytical methods).
Indications
It is used for acute respiratory diseases with rhinitis (runny nose), acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, otitis media (as part of combination therapy to reduce swelling of the nasopharyngeal mucosa), to facilitate rhinoscopy.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline and other components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, severe atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, surgical interventions on the meninges (in the anamnesis), pregnancy, lactation, children under 6 years of age-for 0.1% solution (0.001 g / ml).
With caution: Â coronary heart disease (angina pectoris), diabetes mellitus, prostatic hyperplasia, hyperthyroidism, children under 2 years of age-for 0.05% solution (0.0005 g / ml).
Side effects
With frequent and/or prolonged use – irritation and / or dryness of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, burning, paresthesia, sneezing, hypersecretion; rarely – swelling of the nasal mucosa, vomiting, headache, palpitation, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, insomnia, visual impairment, depression (with prolonged use of high doses).
Interaction
Incompatible with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.
How to take, course of use and dosage
Adults and children over 6 years of age are given 1-2 drops of 0.1% xylometazoline solution in each nasal passage 2-3 times a day. For children and children under 6 years of age, apply a 0.05% solution of 1-2 drops in each nasal passage 1-2 times a day. Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day and no more than 3-5 days. Do not use the drug without a break for more than 3-5 days.
Overdose
Symptoms: increased side effects. Treatment: symptomatic under the supervision of a doctor.
Special instructions
Before use, it is necessary to clean the nasal passages. It should not be used for a long time, for example, in chronic rhinitis. Missed dose: use immediately for 1 hour, do not use after 1 hour; do not double the dose.
Effects on the ability to drive a vehicle or equipment: Xylometazoline, in dosages higher than recommended, may affect the ability to drive a vehicle and engage in other potentially dangerous activities that require concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions.
