Pharmacological action
Antiviral drug for external and topical use. Acyclovir is active against Herpes simplex types 1 and 2, Varicella zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegaloviruses. Thymidine kinase of virus-infected cells actively converts acyclovir to mono -, di-and triphosphate through a series of sequential reactions. The latter interacts with viral DNA polymerase and is embedded in the DNA that is synthesized for new viruses. Thus, “defective” viral DNA is formed, which leads to suppression of replication of new generations of viruses.
Clinical pharmacology
With repeated application of the cream, systemic absorption is minimal.
Indications
Skin and mucosal infections caused by Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, including lip herpes.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
Adequate and strictly controlled clinical studies on the safety of the drug during pregnancy have not been conducted. Use is indicated only in cases where the intended benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to acyclovir and other components of the drug.
Side effects
Local reactions: sometimes – short-term redness, itching, peeling, burning or tingling in the areas of application of the drug. Allergic reactions: rarely-allergic dermatitis (more often associated with a reaction to excipients); in isolated cases-angioedema.
Interaction
No interactions of Zovirax with other medicinal products have been identified.
How to take, course of use and dosage
The drug is recommended to be applied 5 times / day (approximately every 4 hours) in a thin layer on the affected and adjacent areas of the skin and mucous membranes. Duration of treatment – at least 4 days. If there is no healing, treatment can be continued for up to 10 days. If symptoms persist for more than 10 days, you should consult your doctor. The cream is applied either with a cotton swab or with clean hands to avoid additional infection of the affected areas.
Overdose
There are no data on overdose of Zovirax®.
Description
Cream for external use of white or almost white color, homogeneous, without small, large and foreign particles, without signs of stratification.
Special instructions
To achieve the maximum therapeutic effect, it is necessary to use the drug already at the first signs of the disease (burning, itching, tingling, feeling of tension and redness). If there are severe manifestations of herpes of the lips, it is recommended to consult a doctor. The cream is not recommended to be applied to the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes, as local inflammation may develop. When treating genital herpes, it is recommended to avoid sexual contact or use condoms, since the use of acyclovir does not prevent sexual transmission of the virus. Patients with immunodeficiency in the treatment of any infectious diseases should follow the doctor’s recommendations.
